Resource Recovery and Waste Classification
Soil disposal has the potential to be the most costly aspect of any excavation. How those soils are classified and managed on site directly impacts the bottom line of every project.
All material being exported from a site must be generated, transported and received in accordance with the POEO (Waste) Regulation. The NSW EPA has provided the Waste Classification Guidelines for the classification of waste material to be exported from a Site.
Soils and other material being disposed to landfill attract a waste levy; however, the EPA provides a number of general exemptions and immobilisation approvals, and the ability to apply for special exemptions. Exemptions avoid resource materials, such as uncontaminated soils, being taken to landfill; which in turn avoids landfill disposal costs.
CHEC’s experience in recognising and implementing relevant exemptions, avoids unnecessary disposal to landfill. This benefits the environment and provides significant cost savings to a project budget.
The supervision and management of soil excavation allows the real time ability to reduce costs by avoiding cross contamination of Virgin Excavated Natural Material (VENM) and/or exempt materials. CHEC has extensive experience working with civil excavation contractors to recognise and manage waste streams to minimise project costs.
